Annual Maintenance

While performing annual maintenance procedures, your service technician will complete a thorough examination of the extinguisher.  This is intended to give maximum assurance that the extinguisher will operate effectively and safely when needed.  This examination includes the following steps.

  • Visually inspect the extinguisher cylinder, handle, hose, and gauge for any damage that may require repair or replacement
  • Inspect the pressure gauge to ensure that it is working properly and that the extinguisher is pressurized to the proper operating level
  • Verify that the pull pin is securely fastened and that the tamper seal is unbroken
  • Record the necessary service data on the extinguisher inspection tag

6 Year Maintenance

Every six years, stored pressure extinguishers must be emptied and subjected to applicable maintenance procedures.  In addition to the items completed during the annual maintenance your service technician will complete the following additional steps when performing the 6 Year Maintenance.

  • Discharge the extinguisher and pressure using a closed recovery system
  • Perform a visual inspection of the interior of the cylinder
  • Remove and disassemble the valve assembly, clean and inspect the valve stem, and replace the O-ring
  • Fill and recharge the extinguisher
  • Replace and secure the pull pin with a tamper seal
  • Ensure service data is properly recorded on the recharge label, service collar and inspection tag

Hydrostatic Testing

Every 5 or 12 years, depending on the type, an extinguisher must undergo a hydrostatic test to verify the integrity of the cylinder.  Our mobile service units are outfitted with the necessary equipment to allow our service technicians to perform the hydrostatic testing on site for most types of extinguishers.  In addition to those items performed during the annual and 6 year maintenance procedures the following steps are performed during a hydrostatic test.

  • Fill the extinguisher with water and pressurize it to the applicable test pressure
  • Empty the water and dry the inside of the cylinder before refilling and recharging the extinguisher
